Playing Wordle can be as much a part of your morning routine as having a coffee or catching up on the news. But even the most experienced players can run into problems, and here’s why Newsweek is here to help you cross the finish line.
The premise is simple. You have six attempts to get a five-letter word, a correct letter in the right place lights up green, a correct letter in the wrong place turns yellow. Gray is the color of the tile, and perhaps your mood, if the letter is not in the word at all.
Tactics are important. It’s always a good idea to start with a word with lots of vowels, and leave the less used letters for later.
Things can get tense on the fourth or fifth try if you feel like you’re a long way from getting the answer, but if you succeed, a box will appear showing your track record. You can then share it with your friends and shout it from the rooftops, or keep it to yourself if you fail.
Created by software engineer Josh Wardle, the game was released with little fanfare late last year. But its growth has been exponential, and its global reach ensured when New York Times bought it for an undisclosed sum.
It is now played by tens of millions of people worldwide, as this graph below by Statista highlights.
Other Wordle-inspired puzzles include the music-based Heardle, the math-based Nerdle, and the challenging Quordle, which requires players to solve four words in just nine tries.
